Lenny unzipped the leather portfolio he had brought with himâa specially-made carrier that looked somewhat like an oversized brief case.
âMaybe theseâll help,â he said.
âWe managed to get two good sketches of the gadgetâat least, as much of it as that Russian lady scientist has put together so far. I kind of like the rather abstract effect you get from all those wires snaking in and around, with that green glass tube in the center. Pretty, isnât it?â
âVery,â said the colonel without conviction. âI wonder if it will help Davenport any?â He looked at the pictures for several seconds more, then, suddenly, his eyes narrowed. âLennyâthis piece of green glassâthe thingâs shaped like the letter Q.â
âYeah, sort of. Why?â
âYou said it was a tube, but you didnât make it look hollow when you drew it.â
âIt isnât; itâs solid. Does a tube have to be hollow? Yeah, I guess it does, doesnât it? Well, then, it isnât a tube.â
Colonel Spaulding picked up the phone and dialed a number.
âColonel Spaulding here,â he said after a moment. âLet me speak to Dr. Davenport.â And, after a wait: âThis is Colonel Spaulding, doctor. I think we may have something for you.â
âGood morning, colonel. Iâm glad to hear that. What is it?â
âThe Q-shaped gadgetâthe one that you said was supposed to be painted emerald green. Are you sure thatâs the right translation of the Russian?â
âWell ⦠uhââ Davenport hesitated. âI canât be sure on my own say-so, of course. I donât understand Russian. But I assure you that Mr. Berensky is perfectly reliable.â
âOh, I have no doubt of that,â Colonel Spaulding said easily. âBut, tell me, does Mr. Berensky know how to read a circuit diagram?â
âHe does,â Davenport said, somewhat testily. âOf course, he wasnât shown the diagram itself. We had the Russian labels copied, and he translated from a list.â
âI had a sneaking suspicion that was it,â said Spaulding. âTell me, doctor, what does L-E-A-D spell?â
âLead,â said the doctor promptly, pronouncing it leed. Then, after a pause, he said: âOr lead,â this time pronouncing it led. âIt would depend on the context.â
âSuppose it was on a circuit diagram,â the colonel prompted.
âThen it would probably be leed. Whatâs all this leading up to, colonel?â
âBear with me. Suppose you had a cable coming from a storage battery, and you wanted to make sure that the cable was reasonably resistant to corrosion, so you order it made out of the metal, lead. It would be a led leed, wouldnât it?â
âUm-m-m ⦠I suppose so.â
âYou might get pretty confused if you didnât have a circuit diagram in front of you to tell you what the label was talking about, mightnât you?â
âI see what you mean,â the scientist said slowly. âBut we canât show those circuit diagrams to Berensky. The Secretary of Defense himself has classified them as Class Triple-A Ultra-Hyper Top Secret. That puts them just below the Burn-The-Contents-Before-Reading class, and Berensky doesnât have that kind of clearance.â
âThen get somebody else,â Colonel Spaulding said tiredly. âAll you need is a man who can understand technical Russian and has a top-level secrecy clearance.
